Johnson County long has approached the subject of education as an investment rather than an expense. The result is a county with high-quality schools that not only produce accomplished students but also attract companies and individuals looking to relocate.

On Nov. 4, voters can ratchet up their investment in education by approving Question 2. The measure would enact a one-eighth-cent sales tax to pay for what is called the Johnson County Education Research Triangle, which includes:

• Increased cancer research and treatment, including financing for the University of Kansas Cancer Clinical Research Center. The facility, which would be housed in a Fairway building that the Hall Family Foundation has said it will donate if the measure passes, will improve the chances of winning designation by the National Cancer Institute. This, in turn, would bring millions of dollars more in research grants each year and give area residents access to top experts and new treatments without leaving home.

• Expanded degree offerings through financing the KU Edwards Business, Engineering, Science & Technology Center. Money raised by the tax would allow the KU Edwards Campus to offer 10 new undergraduate and graduate degrees, and bring a strengthened partnership with Johnson County Community College.
